Acoustic telemetry yield data on the instrumented animal’s positions, path, space use, activity levels, temperature use, and habitat selection in up to four dimensions. Here, we illustrate how detections on a grid of acoustic receivers can be used to investigate patterns in the behaviour and physiology of free living fish to describe where, when, how, and why animals are moving. Together, lake telemetry studies are powerful tools for inquiry about processes and patterns in ecology
