The factors affecting the relationship between the intensity of searching effort in the two spaces. The conceptual diagram shows latent and measured variables, together with their direct and indirect relationships (see legend). The assumed direct relationship between the intensity of search in the horizontal and vertical spaces, modulated by changes in movements in response to the area’s profitability, results in a potential indirect relationship between the derived horizontal and vertical foraging indices (hFIs, vFIs). The indices and their relationship may be affected by factors influencing the behaviour of the animals, such as predatory tactics, dive depth, trip direction and the presence of resting behaviour, or by methodological issues, such as the resolution of the data. The relationships between variables investigated in this study are represented by black arrows (not investigated = grey arrows)
