Accuracy of Argos Kalman smoother locations with and without subsequent state-space model filtering. The log difference in root mean squared distance (logΔ RMSD) from interpolated GPS locations was calculated for each individual animal. In both cases, the Kalman smoother locations were subjected to the same travel-rate filtering to remove highly implausible observations. Negative values indicate the state-space model-estimated locations are more accurate. The inner quartile ranges are beige boxes and medians are black bars
