Approximate breeding and wintering ranges of the two subspecies of willow warblers, and their contact zones (migratory divides) in Scandinavia and Poland indicated by the range overlap. The subspecies trochilus migrates SW through Iberian Peninsula and winters in western Africa, whereas subspecies acredula migrates SSE through eastern Europe and winters in eastern to southern Africa. The hybrids originating from the migratory divides are hypothesized to migrate intermediately relative to the parental routes
