Stocking rate and fine-scale activity patterns in six study areas A-F. Stocking rates at paddock scale were obtained from interviews with herdsmen. Fine-scale intensities of grazing, resting, and walking were obtained by discretizing GPS positions on a 25 m grid and normalizing to LU ha−1 yr−1 using herd size and the duration of summering. Paddock borders, sheds and water sources are also displayed. Small, hatched paddocks are areas excluded from grazing. Contour lines are based on elevation data of swisstopo, Wabern, Switzerland. All areas are drawn to the same scale
