Schematic depicting patch choice throughout the water column. In the surface only model, we assumed the turtle made a choice to visit one patch out of many available patches. We extend that simply by extruding the choice set down through the water column by taking the x,y location of the animal at the surface and matching it to the daily depth of interest (red dot; see text for more details). Now the assumption is the animal makes a choice of one place from patches (green circles) throughout the whole water column (i.e. x,y,z), as opposed to simply at x,y.
